I think you should rent a suitable cottage or condo, just enjoy several days exploring the lake area and visiting a few places for sale, especially right now with a heat wave all over the country. I've seen all sorts of homes around Lake Lure, and like any house some are nice and some are inadequate, some locations are up a stream and thus not on the lake, and some homes might be on the lake but take forever to drive to because the lake is just so enormous. I would never arrange for seasonal living or a permanent vacation home without seeing a variety of places first, and in person. You pay to get in there, not much, and there is parking for a nice, flat, but long trail that takes you to the base of the waterfall, and then there's the elevator area where you park and go up to the top, great views of Lake Lure and surrounding area, a little cafe, and ledge paths for people to walk along, with a hanging bridge out to the top of the "chimney." Gulp! The final scenes of "Last of the Mohicans" was filmed up on the stone outcroppings.

The movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed on the lake, and the location is now a tourist spot.Īlso, next to Lake Lure is Chimney Rock Park, which is a cliff/rock formation way up high with a waterfall dropping hundreds of feet and eventually going into the rushing river. It is rather a tourist destination, so it's less town-like, rather has restaurants, a hotel, a little beach, boating, and fun-type shopping. But as a resort getaway, it's a good mountain spot, lots of trees and hills, many of the homes have views of the lake, and it's cooler up there than even Asheville is, which we're 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the state.
The road going up there is winding and steep, so you can't really live there and expect to commute to Asheville, for example.
Lake Lure is a very large lake in the higher mountains near Asheville, maybe an hour's drive going south through the valley of Fairview.
