The young man plans to master skydiving, a skill of his invention. Now walking on a prosthetic foreleg (following the first film’s climactic battle), he’s even closer to Toothless than he was before. Hiccup, though, is off on his own with Toothless. (A black sheep earns ten points.) Since the dragons sport vivid racing stripes and DeBlois choreographs the action to John Powell’s infectious Celtic soundtrack, this twist on Quidditch is a flying-serpent celebration – a “dragenanny” or “dragopalooza.” It’s also a terrific showcase for Hiccup’s athletic girlfriend Astrid (America Ferrera) and his more comical pals (especially Kristen Wiig as the frustrated female half of a set of loutish twins). Youthful Vikings jockey their pet dragons while swiping specially marked sheep and tossing them into baskets. In a virtuoso setup, DeBlois depicts the “new” Berk as a roughneck utopia with an exultant dragon race through a high-flying, harum-scarum course. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” begins five years after Hiccup persuaded Stoick that dragons are sensitive and smart. He also matures into a charismatic leader for his species. Always key to the series’ charm, Toothless, in his own feline/canine way, becomes as stirring a mix of animal behavior and universal emotion as old King Kong. What makes the film so sly and unpredictable is that Stoick’s destiny and example are crucial to his son and to Hiccup’s pet dragon, Toothless – the Night Fury that Hiccup shot down and brought back to fighting trim with a prosthetic tail-fin.
Tribal chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), Hiccup’s father, delivers many of them, including “No task is too small when it comes to serving your people” and “Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with.” Writer-director Dean DeBlois packs this epic cartoon with as many ringing pronouncements as Hollywood’s Golden Age swashbucklers. He foresees brave new worlds for Vikings and dragons alike, and uses his mechanical genius to help make his dream of peace and vitality come true.
